Aluminum Sutro Tower
Completed in 1972, Sutro Tower is located atop Mount Sutro, overlooking San Francisco. At 977 feet, it is the tallest and most visible structure in the Bay Area. The three-pronged tower is recognizable from many neighborhoods, and is a familiar icon to many San Franciscans. The tower design of this model was drawn from engineering drawings and photographs, and then simplified into this format.
The parts are waterjet cut from 1/8" aluminum, buffed and filed, and joined with a high-strength glue. The top connects with internal brass pins. The assembled tower is sandblasted and painted with 2 coats of primer+paint for a durable finish.
The finished piece comes in a specially-designed tube.
